Discover the exquisite craftsmanship of the Tonga Basket, meticulously handcrafted by Mbare artisans in the remote Binga district of Northern Zimbabwe. This region is home to the displaced Tonga people, where many women continue to preserve their rich cultural heritage through traditional weaving techniques. Each basket is a testament to their skill, featuring intricate patterns created using the over and under style of weaving.
A 16-inch diameter basket can take up to two weeks to complete, showcasing the dedication and artistry involved. The baskets are finished with a coiled rim, adorned with a distinctive herringbone pattern, adding a touch of elegance to each piece. Made from all-natural, locally harvested materials such as wild grasses, small vines, and palm leaves dyed with tree bark, these baskets are as sustainable as they are beautiful.
The largest bowls are still used by the Tonga people for winnowing grains, maintaining their original purpose. By purchasing this fairly traded African basket, you not only acquire a stunning artisan product but also contribute to improving the living standards of families in developing countries. Your purchase plays a vital role in keeping traditional crafts alive.
Diameter: 22 - 26 inches. Please note that patterns vary for each unique basket. Made in Zimbabwe.
